First, thanks for your assistance.  I am trying to add detail to a house model.  We have several gables and I am trying to add fascias and soffits to the roof ends.  I can create a fascia / soffit for the sides of the gable but cannot get the front to join with the side.  We are using a 1 x and crown for the fascia trim.  Have not figured out how to over lap the roofing on top of the crown but have used the rafter cut and hort/vert setting to get the fascia to be viewed from the side.  I cannot view the fascia at the front of the gable unless I pull it horizontally out and float it.  What is the trick here.  I have reviewed the forum but cannot find a similar issue.  I tried to create a sweep in place for the crown but the front of the gable "hides" the crown."   Thanks, Kris

You can make the roof you have the "structure" and place a second thin "finish" roof, adjust the overhangs to go over the crown.

BTW is your siding fill pattern upside down?

Thanks for the response.  How do you make the crown join?  I tried an in place sweap on the front of the gable to join the edge and cannot seem to get it to work.  Yes, my fill is up side down.  oops rushing too much.  Anyway if you can help with the crown it would be much appreciated.  Thanks for your time!  Kris

The basic problem is that even in the field, the detail doesn't work because the top and bottom of the crown doesn't align (not wrapping with corners perpendicular to the plane) so the mitre is not a true 90d.

You have a few design/modeling options

Do you not want a soffit? Therefore, no returns? The simple answer is to set the rafter tail cut to perpendicular to the face. I don't have revit on this machine. So I'm hoping this is possible. Then the fascia or sweep should wrap and join

If you ore ok with returns then model the roof and the returns (different roofs and join) The fascia should wrap. Play with the verticall offset. Model a soffit.

The other option is a construction detail I saw on many homes in Boston. Essentially the rake extends past the fascia the way you have it and hides a gutter. Change your profile to be a solid (no back to crown, the profile would be back of fascia, front of crown, etc) and it would look ok when modeled.

Another design choice you have to make is regarding gutters. A flat true vertical fascia with the rake board cut flush with fascia and extend the gutter past the rake edge is a common design or a flat fascia with the "Boston" detail.

I tried to cover the varied design options you have. Be sure to post a screen shot of your solution.

HTH

Hi HTH,

Thanks for your response and patience.  You gave me an idea for a work around.  I guess I have been working on too many commercial projects.  Lost my residential trim language.  I will work and see if I can get the trim and soffit typical details worked out.  I do appreciate your time.

I worked up a sample project and fascia with crown.

Be sure to post your results. It helps others later on.

Hi HTH,

I was able to open your PDF but could not open your rvt file.  No worries, I was able to create a fascia similar to yours.  I want to continue to model and then I will post my results.  I appreciate being able to talk my problems through in this forum.  It helps a lot.  I will work to try to provide information for all.

Kris
