do i just import the cad? so it then becomes a symbol? Is it possible to have the 3d max materials back into that model, or do i need to do it in another method.

Like Alabaster said export to DWG and import in a Family the DWG, the object wont be parametric, check your HELP menu (First image), it wont import the materials you assign in MAX but if in MAX you create the obj. with different layers (colors) you gonna see in the "Materials" several "Render ###.###.###" (second image) and you can change those "renders materials" to a REAL material in Revit....

Also search here in the forum about this issue, there are lots of threads...
