I beleve there are more threads on this subject. in 2010, click the revitsymbol -> options -> File Locations. Here you can set the path for user files.

Sorry gebber your answer is wrong. leeroy check the attachments: 1.It says to open the revit.ini file 2.The highlighted text is what your default path for loading the families. 3.Give your customized path. Then save it and open Revit application. Now click on Load From Library>>>Load Family, it will take to your prefered path.

Actually Pavan, Gebber was not wrong...and neither were you. He just needed to go one step further. To map the library locations and project locations in Revit, go to the application menu (the big R) > Options > File Locations > Places If you map the library locations through the Revit dialog it writes the locations to the .ini file

Brett even you too misunderstood the query. Actually Leeroy wants to go to his Library location when he clicks on 'Load Family'. Check the attachments. You can not achieve this with menu "the big R) > Options > File Locations > Places". You said "If you map the library locations through the Revit dialog it writes the locations to the .ini file". You cannot map Library locations, only default template and default path for family templates can be mapped. Please correct me if I am wrong.

WWHub I am surprised seeing some of the experts are unable to understand the query and more over giving answers without trying whether it works or not. Why don't you guys try before confirming your answers. The actual query is "how do you set the default location for files such as families so that when you go to load a family, you go straight to the family library". FYI I am very much aware of Options>>File Locations>>Places.Ok take a trail, Set some location in 'Places'(D:\Pavan\Test\Families), now click on Load Family. Are you able to go to the given specified path??? The specified folder(TEST) will be on the left pane(Places List). Please check the attachments for more details. You have to click on the Folder(TEST) to go to your specified path. If you follow my method then you can straight away go the specified folder.

Pavin .... The question: " how do you set the default location for files such as families so that when you go to load a family" the answer: "To map the library locations and project locations in Revit, go to the application menu (the big R) > Options > File Locations > Places" Look at your own example in your image at the left. Your default location is the "Imperial Library" not "Test"! See what looks like an "E" with an up arrow beside it? Click on the test path then click on the E up and move test to the top. It will now be your default. Revit can only work with what you tell it and it starts from the top of the list but it shows you the other options you add when you load (See Attached). Note that I moved my Lbrary 1 to the top of the list and it now opens first but the others are available. ALSO NOTE THAT I DID NOT WRITE ANYTHING TGO MY INI FILE ! Revit does that automatically.
