Newbir, First Post!

I have a roof that is light guage metal trusses. I need to see the framing memebers in the section for the trusses. It is not important that they are accurate, but I need the contractor to be able to understand what is going on. For the life of me I can not seem to figure out how to show this. I am using the 8"  rafter family that comes with revit, but it doesn't show the bottom chord. I am fighting not to just draw the section in Autocad, because it seems the only way is to use the detail lines to draft what I want. Any suggestions?

As always any help is appercaited.

I'm guessing you probably already checked, but make sure the detail level is set to medium or fine, otherwise the truss lines will show up only as the centerlines of the members, which would probably appear as a dot when the truss is cut in section.  HPH.

Have you tried the add-on truss+ by AGA-Cad?  Great add-on. Trusses are modeled as wood plate trusses, but once created you can change the material of the members to whatever you'd like (with some varying results)

Please don't spam my threads...

I have checked out Truss+ and it is an expensive solution to my problems.

Since Revit can't do what I want I am only encouraged to draft it. And if I am going to have to draft the trusses in elevation and section with detail lines, why use Revit?. This is the main reason I get irritated with Revit. If your back is against the wall, just draw it, that is defeating the purpose of a smart model right? I understand that there has to be some drafting and I am fine with that but I am getting frustrated. I have been fighting with "work arounds" for 4 hours now trying to understand the best way to simply show a hip roof, with light gauge metal trusses in section (both directions) It seems like a simple and typical condition.

I am back to searching the threads for a solution.

This seems to be the best idea. Place a truss infront of the section view.

Just re-read your post.  So it sounds like you are modeling the trusses as rafters?  I.E. in your 3d view, are you showing just the top chord of the "truss" as though it were a rafter-framed roof?  Revit Structure has a truss tool that you can use to model trusses with top chords, bottom chords, and webs.  I'm not sure that Revit Architecture has this same tool, but it might.  If you model the trusses as rafters, no bottom chord will show up autmotically.  The problem with revit is that it will usually show exactly what's in your model, nothing more/nothing less.

If Revit Architecture does not have the truss tool, I'd suggest either creating an in-place truss family that can be grouped and arrayed, or try downloading one from this site (I think that there are quite a few availible).  You could also create a Model Group by modeling the top and bottom chords as beams and the web members as braces.  Then group all of the pieces of your truss and array it.  If you need to make a change to the truss profile, you can do so and all of the groups will update.

Wasn't my intention to SPAM your posts.  This may come as a total surprise, but I was actually trying to be helpful!

Truss+ has helped me out on a couple of projects and I guess (me giving you the benfit of the doubt here) if you're only going model trusses once, than a product like the one I mentioned would not be a good solution.

I appreciate the help..I do..pardon my frustration as I make the complete transition to Revit.

In a small office the boss is not going to fork out the money for an Add-on so I am stuck with what I got.

I understand and have been there.  For me, it was a good find (of course - we're a structural firm who participates in many truss type projects)

Good luck!
