Hi All, My company recently published 2D and 3D CAD blocks to our website as .dwgs. We're getting a lot of feedback that people want Revit files. I was under the impression that .dwgs are pretty universal and can be imported into Revit and other CAD programs without issue. Could someone help me out on how I could best provide satisfactory files for Revit users? Do I need to get Revit software and build all the models from scratch, or can I import the dwgs and convert to Revit? All of my files are originally modeled in Rhino (on rare occasions, Pro-E). All of our in house modeling is done by product/industrial designers, so we only get input on the software the architects & interior designers are using from our sales team. Any help would be very much appreciated. Alyssa

You should probably tell us what products you are talking about. In Revit, for objects that we want to show up in model views, we would like simple model elements that will show correctly in non detail views. Your CAD drawings may be ok for some of our detail views but many manufacturers tend to over detail even their CAD drawings giving us their production drawings. We don't want to see ever screw.

Also, I've removed all but the necessary details - no screws. I've actually exploded any pro-e drawings that have all the little attachement details (which take up a boatload of filespace) and removed them, too.

ALthough we can take what you have done and use it in Revit it would require work on our end. We would have to isolate the 3D cad portion and import that into a Revit furniture family then assign materials to the layers. This sure would be easier if you provided it in REVIT. A 3D Model element with the 2D plan nested for plan views. Most of us would not use the elevation views. It would be best if the materials are assigned by you.

Thanks for the info! So to create the families, I need Revit software, right?

Or hire someone that understands our needs. There are many capable people here that monitor this site.
