Hello Everyone. This is my 2nd year using Revit for teaching High School resedential Arch Drawing and I have some basic questions:1. why do you think the default setting for first floor is 0'0" rather than Grade being set at 0'0"? 2. it is a good idea to draw the exterior walls separately for the first and second floor? I think it is from a construction standpoint whereas Revit books and defaults I have seen like to set the first floor height at 20'. Thanks so much and be prepared for lots more questions from me. So great to have found this site! JohnAT.

The old drafting convention was to set your first floor to nominal 0'-0" then everything measured evenly from there. If the walls are the same on first and second floors, there is no reason to seperate them from a modeling point of view.

thanks so much. I appreciate your reply. another question: should i set the level heights to allow for a 1 foot floor frame under each floor? So, for an 8 foot interior wall floor 2 should be 9 feet above floor one (8 ft interior plus 1 foot ceiling frame before floor 2)? thanks again. John.

Please let us place an inch simbol and a bracket without getting a smiley face like this " Great questions and they will keep leading you to more great questions. The elevation of a level such as 0'-0" can be altered and 'trickled' to the other levels based on geodetic grade elevation or what ever static elevation you choose. Nominal Residential levels I use are as follows but depends on the project: T/FTG (-9-1" )(also used as U/S foundation wall) (8'-0' basement with 1'-1' floor) T/FDN (-1'-1" )(consideration for 1'-1' floor system) T/1ST FL (0'-0" T/2ND FL (9'-1 " )(with consideration of 1'-1" of 2nd floor system and 1st floor 8'-0" clearence) T/PLATE (17'-1 " )(with consideration of 8'-0" second floor clearence)
