What is the best practice for filing Materials..

I have a few pictures of some materials I'd like to use on future projects. Where and how should I store them so that I do not get and error or invalid material while I'm rendering. Is there a general Material library that I can add to?

The existing materials are built in so you don't have a predefined location to store them.

Basically store them in a lcoation.  Central on a network if you could be using multiple computers.  Don't make the path too deep.  If it gets more than 255 characters you'll have issues.  And don't have tonnes of subfolders.
