My office is looking for a way to incorporate an idea into Revit. Currently what we would like to start doing is to create a spreadsheet with the following Columns:

Sheet#, Date, Modified By, Approved by, Changes Made, Comments, etc.

We would like to do this for several reasons. After a drawing has been issued and a client or public entity has any questions about why something had been changed, we could go back to this reference file and say exactly what happened and when. Does Revit or any other 3rd party software provide this? I am using Revit 2010. Thanks

Why not make a schedule inside Revit with those parameters?

That might be able to work. However, if I am going to have a dummy schedule that won't be shown to anybody it might as well be in excel.

How do the rest of you guys/gals out there keep track of your changes?

Sounds like you need to dive into the API....

We are currently developing an API command to do just this and more...

The API, eh? I checked it out, and it seemed way over my head. We're a small, 6 person firm, and none of us are familiar with programming.

Mr Spot:

I'm guessing (and hopefully mistaken) that your company doesn't share your API developments?

Chris,

I'm taking some classes at AU for the Revit API, I also took some college classes for 3d simulation programming but wasnt very good at it. Do you think it would be hard for me to develop a command that hides all elements of a 3D view that have already been assigned a keynote?

Thanks

Matt

What we did is we made a schedule to look at the revision number and description.  The Date, Initials for the draftsman, and if it was printed for circulation were individual fields that we set as instance parameters.

We then placed the schedule on the sheet in our titleblock template file rotating the schedule so that it readings horizontal within the area of our titleblock.  This way when you draw revisions and annotate those revisions, you assign the revision to the cloud and the number and description populate automatically per sheet.  We use a description of our changes since the previous construction print was released.  This is how we keep track of any changes made.

1. Yes we will start selling some Revit Utilities when they are complete.

2.  That sounds pretty straight forward.  Just a matter of reading the Type Properties and if the "Keynote" value is blank, hiding the element in view.

I would need to check whether we have access to the "hide in view" by element command through the API...
