if I make a simple floor in a new projct say 12' x12', then add 4 walls by picking the edges, how do I unjoin a given wall from the floor, so that I may move it without the floor stretching?

easy one Im sure,  its prolly staring me in the face revit2010 by the way

thanks in advance

You should just be able to click on the wall you would like to move and then click the unjoin geometry button and then click the floor that the wall is joined to.

What patheh should have said was to check this disjoin on the options bar.  Now you can move the wall

BUT ......

This will disjoin every element from the walls - floors - roof - walls - tags - dimensions !

The key here is how Revit builds associations.  If the two items - wall and floor - have common definitions they will associate.   But, if you build the floor without pointing to the wall and dimension it with locks, it will stay in place.

You have to pick the wall then the move - then you will see the disjoin option on your options bar.
