This is my first post here so please bear with me.  I am still having trouble after following this tutorial:

http://revitcity.com/tutorials/how_to_grow_your_family/

I followed it exactly, but when I render, all the materials still appear to be the same washed-out greyish default material.

What could possibly be the problem?

This sounds like you are using a CAD drawing - right?

Two mpossible problems:

  1. You need to understand how Revit assigns materials.  The first rule to learn is that the project RULES.  Once a material is assigned in the project, it always governs the element - no matter how often it is changed in the family.  (So, in you case - did you try to change materials in the family after you had already loaded the family?)
  2. Cad materials are assigned by layer.  In your project, look under settings/object styles/Imported objects/imports in families and adjust your materials.

Thanks for the reply.  I would have gotten back sooner but my email alerts were not configured.

Still not having any luck.  I think it will help to have a specific example.  I have a cad file that is a model of an umbrella.  I want to have a material for the wood pole, the top fabric part, and the metal components.  I included screens, the cad file, and a small revit file.

I wanted to address WWHub's post:

1) I have changed the materials in the family, and tried adjusting them in the project, doesn't seem to make a difference

2) Tried going to settings/object styles/Imported objects/imports and adjusting materials here also
