using a wall type that I believe came with the standard template revit arch 2010 stud wall with two finish materials one above the other each finish material has a defined thickness and surface pattern the thickness option is greyed out and I can't change it. Is there a chance it could be defined somewhere in the materials. also, changing the surface pattern and checking the model radio button has no effect on the model. What am I missing? thanks for any input

it looks like you are talking about stacked walls, it is a wall that is made up of 2 different walls, just get the name of your wall from the stacked wall properties and change the properties of these indevidual walls. is it clear?
