Imaginary.

Hmm. . . explaining scale factor. Tough one to do in a discussion group.

A scale of 12" = 1'-0" is the same as 12" = 12" which is basically 1 : 1 full size.

Scale factor is 'view specific'.

We use scale factors to 'shrink' things down (or scale them up) to fit on the sheet (which we print at 1:1). A sheet of paper is usually in the area of 36"x24" so in order to fit a floor plan (50'x35') onto the sheet we apply a 'scale factor of say 1/4"=1'-0" (1:4Shadey or 1/8"=1'-0" (1:96) to the view.

A scale factor of 12"=1'-0" is 1:1 and used to draw really small objects that fit on a sheet at 1:1 like a bread box or toaster oven.

Also equally as important, scale factor sizes all annotation objects (text, arrow heads, tags) in that view so when they get placed on a sheet they are readable and consistant across all sheets.
