After installing the latest service pack for Revit 2010, our machines are experiencing a common problem with each Revit user.  When working in a project, if we select the Load Family icon, it causes Revit 2010 to crash IMMEDIATELY.  We can edit in place families just fine.  We can even open families and load them into our project that way.  So what causes this?  More importantly; how do we fix this?!?

One of our draftsmen cannot even drag a family in from his list (on the left side) without his crashing.

What to do?

You don't say what platform you are using and I think that is where your problems are.  Have you used cc-cleaner or something like that to clean up your system level files?

We are using 2010, and as for the cc-cleaner, I'm not sure if my drafting supervisor/I.T. guy tried that or not.

I think he just decided to reinstall Revit 2010 on his.  Mine has the latest service pack and I am experiencing crashing whenever I try to load a family from within the project.  Boom, instantly down.

I have a similar problem where I try to insert a Kohler basin or spa or shower or toilet that I have downloaded from Revit City and as soon as I select load family it crashes.

Just to make sure it wasnt Revit I tried to open the family as a file rather than inserting it and the same thing happened it crashed immedialtey

We did a complete reinstall and did not load the service pack 2 and it seems to be working just fine now.
