We have about 8 people working on a big project right now, and me and another are the lucky ones who have not really had any issues.  Then again our computers are pretty high end....

here is the situation:

they have dual core machines with about 4g memory on them, not sure what the graphics cards are but I assume 512.

they are running 32 bit vista or xp pro  (these people are the ones crashing)

I am running 64 bit vista as is 2 other guys, we have no issues.  (my machine and his also has 8g memory with quad cores)

Our file we are using right now is about 102 mb in size.  Here is what we have done to attempt to fix it:

we purged the central file, deleted everyone's local and backup files, and recreated them per the new central file.

We unlinked and deleted any dwgs, revit files, etc.

We deleted all 3d views and renderings within the model

All of these things still do not allow us to have these people save.

I have read this forum some, and I found things such as physically assigining the cores of the computer, etc.  Does this work?  Would large graphics cards work?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Several things you can do.

  1. Revit does not release all available memory as you open and close windows so available space decreases as you work.  Close Revit completely at least once a day.  We do it normally at lunch.
  2. Make sure you run cc-cleaner or something similar on your systems on a regular basis - maybe once a month.  When windows temp file directories get too large, we seem to have problems.
  3. 3D views in the model should not be a problem unless you open multiple views.
  4. Local backup files have no bearing on your problem.
  5. You say you deleted CAD files.  They can be a problem so managing those is good to do.  CAD files may also exist in families.  Did you look there?
  6. Linked CAD and Revit files can be isolated by worksets.  Have you tried that?
  7. Since you are using worksets, have you created them in such a way that you can open your files using reduced worksets?  Don't go overboard on this - just be logical in creating them.
  8. Have you used review warnings to manage your file?  You should do that periodically.  Some warnings you just have to live with but clean up duplicate elements, rooms not enclosed, overlapping items, tags not associated...
  9. Hopefully, you have not exploded CAD drawings anywhere.  That results in multiple linetypes, text styles, hatch types and polylines explode like they do in cad - to small line segments.

thanks for your reply.  We typically do not close down, so we can start trying that.

- we do not have cad files in familys.  Almost all familys we have modeled in house

-we have not created work sets with limited use.  that may be a good idea as we have the work broken out to different people (1 person does the caseworkl, 1 sections, etc)

-we have gone through the warnings and fixed as many as possible.  I think there are about 30 warnings in a 102mb file...not bad we think!

-we do not have any cad exploded.  The only cad is linked files such as site topo, etc.  Which brings up a question...we have a large site modeled, however we really do not need it at all (only for renderings which are done).  Would it be worth getting rid of this?

thanks for your reply!

You say you built your families in-house.  Could they be over-built?  Not everything needs to be modeled and sometimes 3D work should be set not to show except for 3D views and symbollic linework used instead.

Look at item 2 again.  We have found that this is the problem on many systems.

We like to model or site in a seperate linked Revit file that we can turn off when not needed.

We have one project that is over 200 meg and we open that on 32bit, 4 meg systems - graphics on motherboard.  Obviously, we use all the tricks I listed above but we can do it.
