I am trying to add new Area types (departments) by adding shared parameters to the Area tag family , but it does not allow shared parameters. that section is grayed out. Can I add Area Types to Revit 2008? Do I need to open the Area family? and if so how do I open and edit a system family?

Do you mean creating new schemes? This can be done through Area and Volume Computation settings-->Area Schemes Tab and adding new entries. Or are you trying to add additional project parameters to the Area category? If so, go to Project Parameters Settings, check areas and add a new parameter, make it shared if you need to be able to scheduled or tagged...

Thanks for the reply, but i don't think either of those options are what i am looking for. I am trying to do an area plan to illustrate departments(which include multiple rooms) with a color scheme in and area calcs/legend in a schedule. I need to be able to change the 'area type' to a custom name for it to schedule/color as something other than the BOMA standards.

The " Area Type " of area in Revit is hard coded to the BOMA area types and cannot be changed or added to. However, you can add shared parameters to the area category in Revit to represent department or whatever you want. If you are going to use shared parameters be sure you completely research them and understand them. Essentially they are database field definitions that need to be well thought out and standardized for the firm that you work for. I would add a shared parameter called "My Area Type" to the area category that was text based. Once the shared parameter is established it needs to be loaded into a project or preferably your company Revit template. Then you will need to create or modify an area tag to report the new shared parameter. While in the family editor making the area tag you will need to load the shared parameter you created into the tag family. You can skip the whole shared parameter thing if you don't need to report the department in the area tag. In this case simply add a project parameter that is text based to the area category. In either case to do a color fill in the area plan you will need to add a color legend to an area plan view (use rentable not gross or establish your own scheme) You will need to go to the properties of the color legend and add a new color scheme based on either the shared or project parameter you created. Sounds complicated but only takes a few minutes once you get the hang of it. HTH
