I need to remove the default parameters from the room family. I.E. Wall Finish, Base Finish. I have already created shared parameters for these items that I can schedule and that fit my needs better than the out of the box parameters. My concern is people will get confused when they go into the room properties and see parameters that are similar and will not know which one shows up in the schedule. Any suggestions?

Rooms are system families and you are stuck with what is in there.  It may have been better if you could have found away to use those.  I don't know why those would not have worked for you.

One reason they dont work for my purposes is we designate walls by cardinal directions. The default parameter only offers a singular wall finish, this supposes that all walls in every room have the same finish, which is rarely the case.

You really shouldn't have a problem if you use room types and or fill in your schedule from the schedule.  If your users are accostomed to a cardinal schedule, I don't think anyone will get confused with Wall Finish vs North Wall Finish - etc.... and even if they do - that data will not be in your schedule - perhaps you should default these unwanted items to DO NOT USE.

We have not found the cardinal process very effective.  We use paint...etc for the wall finish then use finish tags in the plan or on elevations - works better for us.

It seems that you can't remove the default family parameters, but you can remove ones you have made that are no longer needed.

In the Family Editor (this is in version 2012), use Home > Properties > Family Types to list the current parameters in the family. CLick on the one you want to get rid of, and click on Remove.
