The camera can be adjusted to shoot perpendicular to the direction of the path only in the beginning of the walkthrough. It would be nice to be abe to do a walkby where the camera direction would stay perpendicular to the direction of the path.

Not true, the direction the camera looks is completely adjustable. I suggest you run through the tutorials and help files again.

all you do is when you have the walkthrough open, and are editing it, just use the nav toolbar and go to each keyframe in turn, adjusting the view to look whatever way you want it. you can edit the direction as easily as moving the 3D model around. Or, when you are in 3D, rightclick on the walkthrough name in the browser window and click on show camera, then you can edit the actual path in 3D and manipulate it on each key frame. If none of this makes sense, just read the tutorial and play around with it.
