I am trying to align the surface patterns of various wall components (in revit 2010), however some elements refuse to allow me to move the surface pattern. I can't seem to work out why as it seems to be random as to what it will apply to. The surface pattern is a model pattern, of simple horizontal lines. The main problem seems to be ends of walls, where i get an error telling me the element cannot be moved (I am not trying to move the element, only the surface pattern line). Another problem is with hosted wall elements using the same brick pattern, moving the surface pattern lines moves the whole element instead of just the pattern... anyone else experienced similar?? Anyone know how to resolve this?

I have had a similar problem with a brick fill pattern on the end of a wall where I have indicated that the material is to "wrap" the end. It won't allow me to align the fill pattern so now my coursing looks off No solutions as of yet though......

Okay I too had this problem and found a workaround I thought I'd share... What worked for me was splitting the face, in my case I drew my split face's edges 1/32" away from the real edge of the face, not noticeable in plans, then re painted the face with the material and then I was able to move the surface pattern around. Weird scenario, can't explain it, but there's your fix I guess for now.

Did anybody find a solution to this problem? I have this all the time lateley, with painted surfaces, or a material applied parametrically to a material in a family.
For example, I have a wood panel family that is flexibly dimensioned. Sometimes it has a pattern on it, other times not. The surface within the family is assigned a material instance parameter which I can then control on an element by element basis in the model. If I then try to move the pattern, or align it, the whole object/element moves rather than moving just the pattern.

Check to see if the pattern is a model pattern and not a detail pattern. You can't move detail patterns around.

Anyone have a solution to this?
I'm making new families and the surface patterns are moving fine in the family (yes they are model patterns). When I load the family into a project, the surface patterns will not move. I've tried loading in the same material as well as making a new material in the project and still the surface patterns will not move for me.
I cannot paint it, I do not want to have 4 different materials for each frame and I do not want a quick work around.
Best practice solutions anyone??
See images to see the difference of material mapping between the family and the project.

Sorry - this is one of those items that needs to be fixed.
Although I haven't tried it, you might try using types in the family with the adjustment made there.

Have you tried using the split face tool on the areas where you can't get the pattern to apply? It should automatically align the pattern with the other patterns, as long as it is the exact same material. Modify- Geometry- Split Face. You could also use it to cover the areas that are messed up.

It is a parametric family, not a wall. I cannot split face and paint (nor do I want to).
I want to move the surface pattern to move the x and y coordinates of the render map. Does any one know why it works in the family and not in the project?

Im curious if the positioning of the brick pattern is locked to that position in the project. If you copy the window and move it horizontally does the brick pattern change at all with its positioning. If it does it might be that the pattern is somehow locked globally within the project. No idea how but you might try modelling something else then applying that brick material and using that object to try and shift the pattern on the window (if you change the pattern alignment on another object it may shift it on the windows)

I applied the same material on the exterior wall and was able to move both the surface pattern and the render maping with it, it was a good shot though!

Hope this helps.
So I have been having the same problem, aligning a tile pattern on the end on a wall.
Reading some of the responses above I tried the split face strategy, however I simply split the end face of the all to below my ceiling level since the wall would only be tiiled to that point anyways, and then VOILA!
I was able to align the wall tile pattern to my hart's content.
