I'm just curious if work is picking up for anybody out there.  I work in the luxury custom home market and we are still real SLOW.  We have a few client hanging around, but they are waiting to pull the trigger.  I'm just seeing if there's any "hope" of things picking up soon...

Thanks,

I work in the High end Residential Market as well and it is still really Slow. 4 day workweeks and payscale cuts to the staff.  There are starting to be some more calls of interest, and hopefully things will start to Pickup as people stabilize from the economic Crisis.  I am located in the Northeast, near Boston, where are you located out of?

have you found Revit to give you a larger profit margin on projects over cad?

I am located near Phoenix, Arizona.  Business as been extremely tough because we were on such a high before the crash.  The investors in our company had millions wrapped up in specs that they could not get rid of.  Our office went from 24 people to 9 (Only 2 of us are left doing design and construction docs).  Most design / build companies in the area are falling off the map & shutting their doors.

After 3 years, I can produce construction docs in Revit just about as efficient as I did in CAD.  What's really nice about Revit is being able to look at the house in 3D.  It really helps in the design process.  I also like being able to export to Sketchup because some of the subdivisions are now allowing virtual 3D models.

I still do a lot of work in CAD (details, plumbing isometrics, electrical panels, etc.) in import them into Revit.  I have found that Revit would be awesome with "simple" construction.  When it comes to really custom homes on slope lots, Revit can be a real pain!  For me, Revit is better than CAD once I got through the growing pains.  The growing pains really hurt... but that is the direction the industry is going.

We are a general contracting firm. We frequently bid against 20 plus contractors. Very difficult to win a bid with other contractors getting desperate. So business is slower than we like. We're taking on anything that will increase our client base and work hard to improve our reputation as a contractor that delivers quality. When the economy comes back we want to be poistioned to take advantage. My guess based on 25 years in the industry is that come April 2011, we'll begin to see some true growth. Until then we're grinding it out and trying to make sure our clients (architects, engineers and owners) are super pleased with our performance. I've never worked harder than i am doing now. LOL
