Since every Revit project icon looks the same, how can you know for sure what your local is attached to?  you just have to remember?

I'm confused as to why this is.  Even 2010 files look the same, and when you get properties, there is no indication if it's a local or central.

the main reason I ask is cuz I want to get a better handle on how to link consultant files and make copies to share with consultants.  I mean, you have the detach option when you open and then you have a make a central after save option when you're in the file.  What's the difference between that and just dragging a copy of the icon.

there are really only 2 scenarios we have:

1. to link in consultant files, we drag off a copy and then load it into our project from the new location.

2. to share files with consultants, we detach a copy to a location where they link from.

in each of these cases, would it be better to just drag the icon over instead of opening the program.  I know it would be quicker, but do the links to the locals move and what about the linked files.  DO those go with the copy?  this is very confusing if you let it be and I think it may have helped if the local icons could be different from the central icon.  or maybe the parent (central) could be identified in the properties of the file?

if anyone knows about these specifics, I will listen. ~thanks

We always detach from central and save to a new location to create our shared files or to place a consultant file in our project directory.  We do this to assure that any links are broken and it automatically compresses the file.  We never know when someone may open this file and if they are on our network jeapordize our central file.

Could you just copy / paste from one directory to another... sure.  Most times, this would probably be ok as long as the file is the central.  Local files would still be linked but the would be owned so that too may not be a problem.

BTW - Linked files do not move with the copy.  You have to copy those as well and they may have to be re-pathed at the other end.
