Hi, I am trying to create a night render in 3ds of a building I modeled in Revit. It is a street perspective where I want the interior lights to shine out onto the street. Should I use the lights from my revit project? Also, what are some basic settings or things to think about when you are creating such an exterior night rendering? I have night photos from my site, is there a way to use these to get lighting levels or something?

Thanks

If you are using IES files for your lights in Revit use them for sure!

Open your photograph in Photoshop and under File/File Info/Camera Data 1 use these settings to set the exposure values for your photographic exposure controls

any tips on how to set up Mental Ray in 3ds max to get a good render? Also, I've set up my revit lights with IES profiles but they still won't show up and shine through the curtain wall in my building. How can i fix this? do they need to be turned on?

if you set the render settings in Revit to be sun and artificial when you export to FBX the will import on, or else you will need to turn them on individually. You can go to Tools/new scene explorer  and add the column for "light on" to manage which lights you want on and off, its a little easier then selecting them one at a time.

In the enviroment and effects dialogue set the exposure control to  "mr photographic"  then use the preset physically based lighting, outdoor nighttime. preview your render then adjust the aperture and image controls to get a lighting solution that appears the way you like it
