I get a pop-up error message tilted "Import Geometry Not Visible" when trying to link a dwg file into a RS2010 project. I have never seen it before, and have no idea what to do with it. The linked file does not show up at all in revit. I have tried exploding and flattening everything in the dwg file, and still nothing. Now it seems I can’t link in any dwg file into this model. Does anyone have any idea what this means?

I have never had any problems linking in DWG files before. This only started this morming when I tried to link in an ABS ductwork file to show roof top equipment. But the file was not even drawn in 3D, other than some 3D wall styles. I even flattened the file and exploded everything, and still nothing.

Never mind. Stupid OE problem apparently. I just went into the visibility graphics, imported categories screen, and found that somehow “show imported categories” button was unchecked. Doh!

I am getting this error message, went to Imported Categories and everything is checked. I am trying to import a cad block into a Revit section view.

Maybe we can fill this thread with people who ask, then solve minutes later. On the Import Cad Formats Dialog box I had to check Current View Only, and Positioning to Manual - Center.

Try making sure that there is absolutely nothing in paper space in the dwg file. I had that same problem. There was something in paper space, I deleted it. Revit then asked me since there was nothing in paper, did I want to import model space objects instead. Worked great.

allow me to add to the solutions:
I had this same problem (importing cad objects and getting the "import geometry not visible" error message). Get this... I was trying to import into view that was placed on a sheet. I had activated the view on the sheet, and then went to import the CAD file. Couldn't get it to show up. After an hour's worth of trying various things, I went to the plan view in the project browser and imported, and everything showed up fine. Lesson learned: don't try to import into a view that you have activated from the sheet; go back to the native view instead. I don't know of any other Revit command that behaves differently based on whether you are in a view activated on a sheet versus the view in the project browser.

So I'll share this, hoping it helps sby else too. I have a central RVT file (A), which I work on from a local file (nothing new here). Then I have another central RVT file (B), which I again work on from a local file (nothing new again). My setup is that file B is linked inside file A. B only contains our modular grid, nothing else. All of a sudden file B stopped showing in file A and when I try to relink it it gives the annoying "Import Geometry Not Visible" prompt. Tried checking everything and looked for the visibility of grids, view range, etc. etc. ... everything from many similar threads. I finally discovered that it had to do with the settings inside our 1. VIEW TEMPLATE (you might not have one so just skip to next step), then 2. V/G OVERRIDES, 3. Revit Links, 4. last tab DISPLAY SETTINGS. Open that and play with it. In my case I had to look under the 1st tab 'Basics' and then toggled the radio button to 'By linked view' and then for the row 'Linked view' and then there I selected the correct floor plan view which hosts our grids. Play with that and I hope this tip helps. Best of luck!
