After our first job, I made a custom template file using that job as a starting point, thanks to the help of people here. I noticed though, that my template file is 34mb and takes a long time to load. Is there any way to see what items are making up most of the memory usage? Other than families, what else could take up so much space? I have no sheets, schedules, or legends included in the template, I do have views, but only for 1 floor and 1 3d view per trade. I realise I cant delete completely the system families, as each family has to have one type in it (seems kinda dumb, especially for MEP having to have all the architectural stuff in it), but i went through some of the system families and delete more stuff, then after I saved, the file size is now BIGGER!!! I thought deleting 20 - 30 items would reduce the file size. Any ideas?

Did you compact the file after modifying it? I think you do want to setup sheets/schedules/legends... swap out sheets when they are established. Do you have linked in CAD items in families?

I dont think so, most likely no then. Can I compact a template file? I will open my original file, and compact it to see how much that helps. Should I have made my template file AFTER I compacted the file I was going to use as a template?

I opened the file and did a compact, it did not change the file size, so I must have done it when we completed it. I do not have any cad items in the families. I only had cad drawings in the project in drafting sheets. I actually didnt know you can do that. Is a 34mb template abnormally huge or about average?

Our architectural template is 10 and it has sheets, schedules and legends in it. I don't know about MEP but 30 sounds excessive to me.

if you do a purged all unused how many items are there?

The template had 559 items to purge, and after it purged, is went from 29,528 to 2,068 in size. Is there a way to find out which of the 559 items uses up the most space? Is there a way to get a list and their sizes of whats loaded in the template?

I thnik you are going about this wrong. It's not a question of size right now, it's a question of need. Your template need only have some basic items in it as far as model families go. In addition, you need your basic graphic elements set up, your object styles, line types, title and sheets and yor normal schedules and legends. Beyond that, use your library. You might consider what we are doing. We have created several "demonstration" projects, broken down into various categories both model and detail, that are loaded with our prferred families. Each of these show their families organized on a sheet in plan/elevation & 3D view. These are easier to search and load from than the library. After you find the ones you wantg, just highlight multiple families and copy/paste into the project.

You bring up an interesting point. As we have only done 1 complete job, I have yet to identify all that we need set up, and how we need to set it up. I have the line types set up, but not sure what you mean with regards to the basic graphic elements, object styles, title and sheets, schedules, and legends. What I started to do was create a seperate template that has our schedules in it, and another template that has our cad blocks for drafting sheets. When we need any of those, I can import them. The thing is, we are in the PME version, and there are allot of families required just to draw ductwork, piping, electrical, plumbing fixtures, that it is hard to eliminate families that I know I will use in virtually every project. I would love to eliminate the families in the architectural that I know we wont use, like walls, doors, etc, but REVIT wont let us delete them, so my base has allot of items I dont need.

well you have a file with the families you inserted into the templete right? just see which are the biggest, or purge them a couple at a time to see what has the most affect.

I don't know if I can help you any furthur but I did hear you say CAD blocks. Is that as in imported CAD details? If so, the sooner you can get rid of these by creating Revit details the better off you will be. If these wre in your template, I think we just found your size problem.

Hey WWHub; tell jcrocco about your idea creating projects that you can bring in your families from. Very useful! So far I've created Door Families and Window Families, but plan on creating others for electrical, mechanical, and data symbols to streamline our template file. This idea of yours might be exactly what jcrocco is needing to do.

Yes, it does seem maybe thats what I am looking to do. My template does not have any cad drawings. What I did was created another file that has our cad drawings that I can import from as needed, specifically so they are not in my template file. It sounds like you have done something similar with families.

I got this idea by looking at the sample projects there are in the REVIT on-line library. In that library you can find a project that has about 10 different stair setups, a sample project with multiple railing styles, another with fences... etc. So you can open one of these files up, look at all your options in 3D, find what you want (or close to it) and copy paste into your project. Wow - simple and fast! So now I am setting up our office library in a similar fashion. Multiple items of same or similar category shown in project files in a manner that you can quickly view and selct from. Better than names! You can do this with any category including your office legacy details....

WWHub, do you know if this can be done with detail views as well? For example, create a project with only door and window details; would it be possible to simply copy in the detail you want? Or would you be able to use that file to import (detail/drafting) views from?
