I have drawn some kitchen equipment, and defined it as a group within my Floor Plan. Now I realize I would like to re-define it as a family so I can attach a label to it. How can I redefine it as a family. I am not able to simply copy-clip the lines into the family definition. I can't do a save-as. The only solution I have found is to save the group to its own Revit File, Export the Revit file int AutoCAD, then insert the CAD file into the family. This seems like a lot of effort for something fairly simple. Has anyone fouond an easier way?

Ouch - I don't like what you are trying to do ... Why not just add an annotation to your group?... unless you need to schedule this somehow. In that case, you could pick something that is unique in your group and create a special tag just for it that will be your "group" tag.

Actually I am trying make it possible to create a fixture schedule and since we do a lot of restaurant work I would like to create objects that I can easily use again on future projects. So ideally I would be creating these within a "kitchen equipment" family type but since that isn't an option we are calling them "mechanical equipment".

To control these through VG, remember, you can always create new sub categories ... just be careful and logical.
