This is my first try at creating myself a custom family. It is a drapping canvas for a patio which I would prefer to have some translucency. The canvas itself is 1/4" thick and I chose a fabric material from the material library. I then proceeded to jack the translucency and transparency settings all the way up without any change once I rendered it. I did change the material to glass just to make sure it was working and it works fine that way. Any suggestions or online tutorials I could be pointed to?

If the render did not change for that material, then either you didn't really change it or the material you changed is not assigned to the family in question. Remember, once a family and associated material is loaded into the project, changing the material settings in the family will no longer apply in this project. The material settings in the project always over-ride the sttings in the family. You can purge the material and family from the project or just change the material in th project.
