I want to make a simple timber member and I'm making this from a new family with the Generic Model Template.

I've drawn the member fine, but my problem is applying a material to it. I'm completly lost, and can't figure it out.

I click on the member and go to Element Properties, click on Materials field, and the Materials window comes up. I leave the material on default (because Wood isn't there - none of the normal materials are there) and try to make it look like wood by clicking the surface pattern and cut pattern. Once in both of these I load the wood_1.pat file from the revit database in the Data folder that comes with revit. This give me the hatch I want, and I pick the colour (brown) from the shading icon.

The problem is, once I do all of this my timber member has the hatch but not the soild colour. I still tried to load this into my project, and when I did the member didn't have the hatch or colour. It just inserted as grey.

Can someone explain how to apply the Wood hatch (normally always available in Revit when working on a project and go to the materials window) to a newly created family? I can't figure out how to make all these normally available materials available in the family editor. I just want to make timber member that's part of the component family.

Thanks a lot!

Nungerson

...."I click on the member and go to Element Properties, click on Materials field, and the Materials window comes up. I leave the material on default (because Wood isn't there - none of the normal materials are there)"....Ok Nungerson, go to Settings-->Materials and duplicate the "default" material name , change it to i.e. "Timber wood",change the solid color. If you want a render material, just click on "Render Appearance", there are all the "normal" materials...after all these configurations, click OK. Next, click your timber member and go to Element Properties-->Materials and all you have to do is to choose your "Timber wood" material next and load into project and there you can apply the wood hatch....

Thanks, erland73. Works perfectly.

Now that I have it in my model, would you know how I can strech it? I made it a 8' 2x4, and want to elongate it to 14'. I can't grab the end and strech it like I would expect.

Thanks!

Hi Nungerson..... "I made it a 8' 2x4, and want to elongate it to 14' "....You can add a simple parameter for this (lenght), in your timber family....

I've been tied up for a while but tried to add a parameter to the timber member but doesn't seam to work.

I added ref planes at each end and dimensioned them, then added a parameter called "length" as shown.

I used this to try to put in my project but it still won't let me change the length.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but obviously missed something in this attempt.

Can you help again please?

Thanks!

You need to lock the wood extrusion to the reference planes.

Use 'Align' command to align the extrusion to the reference planes, and you'll see a lock while aligning. Click the lock. DONE, load into project.

I did have it locked to the plane originally, and it still doesn't work.

Hi Nungerson, if you compare the images that I posted before with the image you posted yesterday, there is a difference, what's the difference?, well you're attempting to make a parameter with both dimensions (with these just uncheck EQ), instead of the total dimension....

Another thing that I didn't notice before is that you didn't group your parameter under Dimensions, so check it too, Nung...

I tried ll of that, and it still doesn't work. The length can't be changed once inserted into the project.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Nungerson.......I can´t still understand how a simple object with one simple parameter can be complicating you. I think I've tried to explain to you this, in an easy way to understand. I think the last thing I could do to help you is if you upload your file so I can verify it....."The length can't be changed once inserted into the project." If you've made it the way I've explained it to you, you could change the lenght by picking your timber, then pick Element Properties-->Edit/New... (see the image)....Good luck Nung....
