Prob: Place a custom built 'generic ceiling based' family component on a sloping ceiling (has an opening)

won't place the desired family ( ceiling a/c supply register) on the 45deg sloping ceiling..tries to place horizontally orientated component replies instance not cutting.. and deletes.

is it a matter of changing the reference plane when creating the family.....?? I gave this ago but couldn't get it to play ball...what am I missing here ? Sad

Edit your family and go to Category and Parameters and uncheck "Always vertical".....
