I have a mechanical plan that has gas piping going to a water heater.

I have the plumbing fixtures turn off, but I do need the water heater on, but it is listed as a plumbing component.

I tried to set a filter to only have familes with names of water heater to be on, all else turned off.

I tried it multiple ways, but cant get it to view correctly.

It seems I need to tuen on the model category for it to work, but how do I limit the filters so only part of the plumbing model with a description of water heater is left on?

Turn on your plumbing - window all and filter for plumbing - use the shift key to de-select your heater now right click and hide all the rest in view.

You can also change a family to be in associated with a different category (one that isn't hidden).  Edit family, Settings, Family Category and Parameters, then click on a different category.

Be careful about changing family categories for visibility reasons because you will mess up any schedules you have. But you can use worksets or even phases...

Ok, good to know.

The issue is I still need to show, say a water heater, on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans.  No mater what category I choose, it most likely will turned off in one or two of the other trades.  I need the water heater on all 3 trades.

Is there a way to tell ojects to turn off if you dont meet this criteria?

Can I make the water heater its own category?

You can put it on a generic model category (for instance) and then it won't be specific to a particular trade.  However WWHub has a good point if you are scheduling these items then you would have to be careful to make sure they are included in the schedule parameters.

I tried hiding all except the water heater, and that works, but kind of a pain.  It can be more of a pain when I have a large building with multiple water heaters all over the place, and trying to deselect them.

Is there anyway to do it with a filter?

I tried changng the type to generic, and that works, but it removes the water heater from all the systems it is conencted to.  If it was done that way in the beginning, it may not be a problem, however a similar problem is that I have other objects in the generic family that I dont want showing up.

How can I filter out what I dont want?  Other ideas?

I am using the water heater as a way of explaining the situation, but to be truthful there could be many more "situations" like this with families needing to be shown in multiple disciplines, that I want to see all other options.

I think I may have it.  Create a filter so that the type name does not equal "Water Heater".  Add the filter in VG and uncheck the visibility button.

You could select the family from the browser - SA (select all) then place those in a unique workset - place all the remaining plumbing in a different workset and turn those off through VG ... or do the same process using phases...

Probably other ways to seperate as well....

Better yet

Or maybe add something to the family ... a nested family that is your gas-piping (mechanical category? - could be same geometry) NOTE - Set this family to shared.  Now when you turn off plumbing ... plumbing goes off ... when you turn off mech ... ditto
