i'm new to revit and trying to select more than one object for deletion, I get the ctrl and start clicking elements. But in the help menu it says i can draw selection boxes to encompass the elements then hit the delete button or "de" but it only seems to take annotation or tagged items, not the actual pipe or ductwork. what type of setting am i missing or has the help menu misinformed me again?

Don't deny your HELP just yet ... it will become one of your best friends if you learn to use it.

If you can't select the item, then something else is going on.  I don't use MEP so I can only guess on some things.  Are these items editable (no puzzle piece when selected) are they in a design option?

yes as far as I can tell they are editable entities, I can select them and delete or add them with the ctrl, I just can't seem to get the boxing option to work.  I've been using the help nonstop since our company didn't want to spring for any type of formal instruction you know one of those things "you should be able to pick it up easy enough it's just like autocad right?", thank heavens i'm just doing easier edits and didn't create the entire building ductwork system.  And the guy that created the ductwork system the boxing option works on his machine, so i'm stumped as to what setting is different.

Ah ... didn't understand the question.

You say you can pick the element but not by window.  Here is why.  Window only works when you have the element fully in the window.  That includes all visible items and any invisible linework that may be in the family.  REVIT uses an kind of X/Y/Z box that holds your family and it all has to be in your window.  Likewise, if you use window crossing and you cross any element of a family - even invisible linework, then you will select this family.

You can sometimes use this feature to your advantage... like by adding an invisible vertical line to a family so that the family is "cut" by the upper view plane of a plan and now it is visible in the view... even though the normally visible portion of the family might be above the cut plane.  For none cuttable families- cut any portion (including invisible) and the whole family will be visible.
