I have downloaded numerous electrical familes from RevitCity (both electrical devices such as switches and receptacles, and lighting). However, after I load them into my project, I am unable to select any form of host (wall or ceiling) to place the device. The only devices that allow me to choose a host (and let me choose WHICH host I want - surface, wall or ceiling), are the families that came default with Revit. I tried the defective families in another project (different file, different architect) and had the same problems. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments???

What families are you talking about? (switches and receptacles) could be in 2D so you only can place them in a 2D representation like a component in a section view in a callout for example, if it's in 3D edit the family and check how it was made to see where it can be attached, also, check the categories and parameters....

One reason could be that the devices downloaded are hosted to a wall- not an extrusion. A linked file needs the host of the familes to be extrusions and not actual walls, ceilings or floors. Those families work only for a non-linked file.
