I have tried doing this by making separate families and tweeking the leader that way, but here is my question:

Is there a way to close the gap between the end of the text and the beginning of the leader.  Sometimes I may have a short description and the leader is way out to the right of my left-justified text.  Of course, if my leader is on the left side, it looks fine.  Does anyone have any tips on how to adjust the beginning ot the leader so it is closer to the end of the text?

change the justification of your text and the leader will behave properly. that is, unless you absolutely require that all of your text have the same justification.  in that case, you'll simply have to shrink or expand your text box until it looks good.
