I need to model multiple 3" depressions in a 7.5" thick structural slab.  Any suggestions?

You can also do an in-place family - category floor that is a void extrusion joinded to your floor.

i guess you really need to figure out what you want to get in the end.  I think wwhub's way would be cleanest, but my way might give you better data such as volume of the different floor types and sq ft of them.

The  edit the slab you are talking about results in a sloped surface.

To start a new thread, go to the forumns page (NOT LATEST POSTS) - choose a category then you will see the start new thread in orange/yellow.

ok

got the thread thing... thanks

not sure what type of depressions you talking about?

i modeled a 'create in place' structural column that was joiend to the floor and then hidden in view properties.. pretty messy, but it worked

The in-place void family thing works well...but what I've discovered is that you can't dimension to the void.  Has anybody else run into this?  Is there any way to get around it?

Why not use a floor hosted family to create the depression and create the symbolic lines?

A simple one is attached I just created for an example.

This works quite well for something that's a square, but let's say you want to create a slab depression that's an irregular shape, like for a mechanical room or a brick ledge.  Of course you can do this using an in-place void family, but then you can't dimension to it, which is kind of the whole point of drawing it to begin with.  Aligning detail lines with the edge of the void doesn't work, either.  Has anyone else experienced problems with dimensioning to an in-place family?  How in the world are you supposed to draw a brick ledge?

When you create your in-place VOID family, you can add symbollic lines that mark the perimeter and dimension to these.
