Using 2009 after backing off of 2010 (too many crashes):

Previously, I tried to insert a bunch of standard details created in Autocad and had horrible things happen.  Dimensions disappeared, text changed, lines went away, etc.  I did the work around of just creating a phantom sheet in Revit and just printing in Autocad the typical detail sheet and inserting that into the drawing set.  I could make each of the dwg details a jpeg and insert them as an image but that creates scaling problems.

I am curious if anyone is using dwg's, either from their old files or those created by vendors, and successfully inserting them into their Revit project file?

i've done it but any text or dimensions will be tough to make right.  make sure to purge the autocad file really well and make sure that it is flat (not 3-d) for the best chances.  Also I delete lines that are not supposed to show up (like defpoints etc) in autocad before importing.  if you use the 'overkill' command in autocad that can help too.  and I always make sure the files are 'linked' not imported.

We do it but cautiously.  There was a post just last week that linked to another site dealing with the issue of linked CAD files.  Here is part of their advice:

A Five-Step Process for Reducing DWG Links

The five steps for reducing DWG links in a Revit project are:

  1. Define how the DWG will be used.
  2. Clean the DWG.  (Wblock works best to isolate items)
  3. Create a Workset for each link in the model.
  4. Link/Make Family/Import the DWG information.
  5. Update/Remove DWG links.

The most imprtant issues here are cleaning the file up.  Especially if you are importing.

If inserting, reduce your layers, delete all hatches, explode blocks and I delete all leaders / arrows and dimensions.  Also delete all curved polylines because they will come in as small line segments. After inserting, add dimensions and text leaders.
