I can't figure out how to change the unit type for Property area tags. I am working in an imperial drawing but need square metres for the site area. The workaround I found was to import the property area tag from the metric library but neither tag let's me change the unit settings in the family editing mode.

i dont think you can automatically make this happen.  you can't change the unit settings in the family because they are shared parameters and even then if you change it to meters from use project settings it just won't display a value. at least in 2009

Yep,

I tried changing the project settings but this didn't do anything. For some reason though the imported tag from the metric library displays square metres inside my imperial project. So where is the secret button to adjust the unit setting for an area tag?

you have to create a new shared parameter to get the 'secret button' to reveal itself. what revit version are you using and can you post the tag your using so I can looks at it?  I don't have the metric stuff handy.
