Alright, my firm has recently made the switch to Revit 2009 (yes, right as '10 is leaving shelves), and I'm trying to set up a stock shared parameters file that can be copied/used as need for each project in our library. The goal is to make scheduling a breeze, but I'm having a hard time. Everything seems to be going as planned until I get to the point where I can declare a shared parameter as instance or type in the family editor. I end up with an error message of "An unsupported operation was attempted."

What I was originally doing was copying the file to the actual project location, changing the name to include the job number, then browsing to the newly named file to incorporate the pre-made parameters within the family editor. Then I'd select a parameter from a group, click OK OK, select type or instance, click OK, and bam. Error.

I've been browsing forums for hours... about to throw in the towel. Any advice? Has anyone seen this message and figured out why they are getting it?

Thanks!

I just tried to simulate your error message, and I could not get it to go "bam". My firm has established a shared parameters file on our centralized server and incorporated all the custom parameters into our project template. I would highly recomment this. You can include all the possible parameters you can imagine, then keep the file in the same, constant location allowing for easy edits/adds later on down the road. This way, all of your projects/families have the same set of custom parameters (whether you need them or not...because you never know) available. It will also save time putting them into the project template (so that you do not have to manually move anything, or bring anything in).

Regarding your specific problem, could you repost, in detail, the steps you went through to get the error message? Including whether or not you began with a project template or the default out-of-box one that ships with Revit. Also, are you trying to import them directly into a family that you are creating within a project, or into an external family? Which parameter categories are you working with?

we had this problem a year ago when we transitioned you need to make a copy of the shared parameters file add a version year to it and only use 08 in 08 and 09 in 09, the shared parameters file is now basically corrupt and unuseable roll it back and make the copy or have your it staff retrieve one from the backup.

another point, it doesnt make sense to have a different shared parameter file with each project, how are you going to handle scheduling and tagging with multiple? unless they are exact copies they will not work.

Thanks for the pointers-- but I eventually figured it out. I took a break from it for a day, deleted the entire file, started over again, and formatted one file for the parameters. Added the parameters to my exisitng families sans errors. Still not entirely sure what I was doing wrong, but as long as I'm getting it to work now I suppose it doesn't matter.

Best,
