I have lighting fixtures in a project that will not select when I drag a box around them, but will select individually. I do not have design options or any other special treatment for these instances. Does anyone know what the problem is?

If you can select individually by pointing then for some reason, the family is probably built larger than what you see and you don't have the whole family in your window. Window a larger area and see what happens. Could also be part of a group.
