how I purge or delete materials not used?? how I do automatic and simple i did the purge but the materials not used continue in the list .. ~thanks

You CAN´T purge unused materials, you have to delete them one by one....go to Setting-->Materials, and delete there what you want....

If the materials are in a family anywhere, they are used!

i have load a few families , and later deleted, and purged , but the material s continue in the list , and i ddont know wick«h is used or unused... the list is extensive

Hey - come on! All users should be using their H E L P before they come to thie forum. Searching under "materials" in the H E L P..... you find :Deleting a Material Deleting a Material function hideInfo() { info = document.getElementById('infoline'); info.innerHTML = ' '; info.style.visibility = 'hidden'; } function showInfo(title) { info = document.getElementById('infoline'); info.innerHTML = title; info.style.visibility='visible'; } - Click Settings
 Materials. - In the Materials dialog, select the material to delete.
See Searching for a Material. - At the bottom of the left pane of the Materials dialog, click
 (Delete). Or you can right-click a material in the list, and click Delete. - At the confirmation prompt, click Yes.
Revit Architecture deletes the material from the project. If the material was applied to elements in the building model, Revit Architecture applies a default material to them instead. THIS IS IT!!!!

my question is if it´s possible to know if the materila are used or not? how i know ,for example, if I insert a object family and next i delete , purge this object , but the material continues in the list. so the list is extensive and i dont know wich material are actually used...

since Revit really doesn't care if a material is used or not before you delete it. i don't think it is possible to tell if a material is in use before you delete it. but i am only guessing based my preface statement.

This is an extremely cumbersome & time consuming task. Autodesk need to add a purge option for materials.

Yes how hard is it to add an option to purge non associated materials, the last thing you want to do is go hit and miss with deleting individual materials in the hope that it was not being used. Sorry WWHub help does not address this issue.

Revit has changed a lot over the years and I can't remember what it was exactly in 2010. But as of 2014, I don't know what your problems are - see image!!!!

I would add that simply pulling up the purge will show you what materials are NOT being used.

I realize this is an old topic which amazes me that, as an experienced Revit user, I still don't have an answer to this.
If I were to open a fresh Revit Family Template for a GENERIC MODEL, included with it are a list of default materials (see screenshot). Things I'm referring to are like: Air Openings, Air Surfaces, and so on.
These materials are not "in use" because the template is blank. It hasn't been used for anything yet. Based on this, one would assume that simply using the "PURGE" function as many have referenced would delete these defaults but it doesn't. The only way I've been able to get rid of these is to delete them one-by-one in the MATERIALS dialogue box. Once I delete them there, I can use the PURGE function to get rid of the remnants of those materials.
Deleteing one-by-one is very time consuming. Also, if I load a another family component into the file that still has these defauts, it will contaminate the loaded family to include all those defaults which must then also be removed manually.
There has to be a better way.

In our practice these defaults are never a problem as we have our own naming convention which is loaded into our project template already which organizes our materials separate from any defaults. And our materials are always assigned in project to families, not the families themselves.
You are correct though (unless i am mistaken) as you can not purge the default ones and unfortunately you also can not select all in the material browser within a family to quickly delete all. You also can not save over a family template file either to create a default without those built in materials.

You say your template is blank. Does hat mean you have no families loaded whatsoever? I'm not asking about placed families.
If a family is in a project and has materials assigned then those materials are in use. To get rid of those, you first have to delete the family, then you have to go through the process again to delete the now, unused material.
