Hey all I have a series of about 40 families i have built including custom materials, I would like to alter these materials and was wondering the easiest way to achieve this? Is there anyway I can get these materials to replace the existing ones so that all the individual elements take on the new materials? Thanks

I'm sorry but your question is not clear. Materials can be initially assigned in the family ... lets say you call it metal 1. If you don't have material in the project called metal 1, then when you load this family, you also load metal 1. However, once metal 1 exists in the project, the definition of this material over-rides the same named material in all families that are loaded. In other words, your naming convention has to be unique if you want the material to be unique.

Sorry WWHub, my question did come over a bit unclear. I'll elaborate on my problem. I'm creating families for upload, all of which use around ten common materials, But as I have been creating the famalies I have been playing with the materials and trying to get them right, so my problem arises when I want the stainless steel in all of them to look the same now that I have the material settings sorted but i have about ten different types of stainless under the same name in each individual file, I understand if I was to put them in a project that it would be easy to get make the material common but I will not be putting them in a project and just keeping them in family viewer. so can I make all the material parametres the same throughout all the individual files? Revit 2010 I hope this makes more sence Thanks

I don't think you meant : "...i have about ten different types of stainless under the same name in each individual file." Do you mean that you have the same name in each file but they are all different.? If so, I think that you will have to edit each one. But consider this. If they are all called stainless1 and you setup your project template to have a stainless1 with the correct setttings, then it really doesn't matter what is is the family because it will assume what is setup in your project template.
