Is it actually possible to make a section cut through the imported dwg file?

I tried it earlier, but it didn't give me the section cut, just the elevation view, any idea?

Thanks in advance.

Nope....

You must "convert" your DWG in Slabs(floor), walls, roofs..... in Revit, if not it just like a "Mass".....

In NavisWorks, this can be done, but it can only be saved as a rendered image file.  Not a dwg file.

Yes, 3d dwg file.

You can't cut a section through an imported 3d dwg file.  I tried to do a full explode of the imported 3d dwg file, and it didn't seem to work either.

In NavisWorks, that's doable, but it can't save as a dwg, only an image file.

if it is an 3d dwg then you want create a create a mass and set the family category to mass and give the mass what ever name you want. the import you 3d dwg into the mass and finish the mass. now you should be able to section your autocad 3d drawing

while your in the mass you go  File => Import/Link => Cad Formats. just as you did before to get it into Revit.

Very cool.  It works perfectly.  That's exactly what I want.

Thanks once again.  I really appreciate that.

I've been having no problem importing the dwg file as a massing model until today.

I got an error message after I clicked on "finish mass".  This is the following error message:

"This family instance has too many edges.  Remove unnecessary geometry or split the instance into multiple instances."  (See the attached PDF file)

How can I ask my consultant to fix this problem in his CAD file?  So that I can import his .dwg file (mechanical layout) as a massing model without this error message.

Thanks in advance.

I know this is an old post, but for the sake of people looking at these old posts for current searches; you can also create a new family, import the 3d autocad model into the family, and then insert the family into the drawing. All 3d autocad components will then cut in section. This might work if you're having problems doing it in a mass element inside the revit model.

Also for the sake of people reading this post. You might want to let them know what family template to use when creating this family. Are you talking about the "Mass" family template?

Great point, actually, because only certain types of families will allow elements to be cut in section. You will have to evaluate what catagory of family your 3d elements would best fit into, but select from the following families that are "cuttable":

CaseworkCeilingsColumnsCurtain Wall PanelsDoorsFloorsGeneric ModelsRoofsSiteStructural ColumnsStructural FoundationsStructural FramingTopographyWallsWindowsThe non-cuttable families would be:

BalustersDetail ItemsElectrical EquipmentElectrical FixturesEntourageFurnitureFurniture SystemsLighting FixturesMechanical EquipmentParkingPlantingPlumbing FixturesSpecialty Equipment
