when i save my central file on my local drive i am able to work on it until i close it, but then can not open it again.  is there a solution for this?  the file becomes completely useless, can't even check the properties on it or delete it.

Not sure what you are doing and it sounds like you don't understand the process.  Central's and Local's are used primarily when more than one person is working on the project but even a single user can use them if they want to use worksets.  When you enable worksets, you need to create a central file but you never should be working in the central.  Instead, you save a local file and work from that.  The central can be on your machine or a network.  The local should only be on your machine.

the central file was set up on our server and i saved my local file from the central file onto my local drive.  i can work on the local file and save to central all i want.  when i'm done for the day and close the local file, i am unable to reopen it.  i don't get any error messages, revit just stalls and doesn't open the local file so i have to reopen the central file and do another save as to my local drive.  there are other people that will be working on this project so that is why the central file was initially set up.  perhaps the worksets were not set up properly.  i would appreciate any insight to this.

thank you.

What happens when you audit your local copy?

Do you have any .dwg links in the file?

What build of Revit are you on? Can be found by going to the help menu > about, and it in the upper right corner.

The latest of 2009 is 20081118_1045

How often do you recreate your central files?

I would ask about your local, but I guess you recreate that rather often Smile

If this only happens to local copies it's really not too bad (albeit annoying) as it is recommended to recreate local copies a couple times a day but if the problem expands to the central than there is a bigger issue. I guess there is something that could be corrupting your local copy, though it should carry through to the central file.

Just some random guesses, but any more information about the file would be helpful.

I think what you are doing is closing REVIT too soon.  Save to central then save local, then when it is done, shut REVIT down.

Ok, so now I have a question.  First let me elaborate; I recently finished a project that was a work-shared file.  I still have the local file on my computer and the central file on the server is currently up to date as well.  My question is this:  What do I do at this point?  Which one do I keep?  Do I need to make it a non-shared project first (and if so, how).  Or, since my central file is up to date, do I simply delete the local file(s)?

On another note, since I am done with the project, should I purge and compact the file?

It really doesn't matter which file you use since you can always make a new central but I suggest you set up a process and follow it.  I would always use the central and I believe auditing/compacting should be file maintenance - not just at the end.  If you are truely done, then you might consider purging.  You can also throw away your archives.

Local files are up to the user.  I like to keep mine for reference and I open them detached.

As far as I know, there is no way to drop work-sharing.
