I'm trying to get all of my existing framing members to display as hidden lines and all the new members as solid(in coarse display). but when I change it in the phase setting it also changes the wall linetypes to hidden.. which I don't want. I also want the lines representing the members to be displayed as thick lines, but the walls to be unchanged.I assumed I could workaround this by making a filter, but there doesn't seem to be a way to filter a structural framing member by the "phase created". Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Be sure to check the phases of your drawing and elements.  If your walls are drawn on the new construction phase, and you are saying to amke existign walls dotted lines, make sure your drawing is setup so that the phase is new construction and the phase filter is to show previous and new.  It is most likely to do with that, from what I can gather.  Play with it a bit and see if it helps.

It is best to ensure that when you draw things, your view is in the appropriate phase.  Structural beams, at least have phase control.  I would assume the others do as well.

I'm aware of the phases being displayed and what belongs on which phase. It's just a matter of being able to have existing walls displayed differently than existing beams, rather than one global linetype and lineweight for everything existing. Ideally, I would just create a custom filter and say all structural framing members on the existing phase display as hidden lines... unfortunately there doesn't seem to be the option to filter by phase.

Why not override the graphics for structural elements in the appropriate views?

If that is too much work, you could create a filter.  What you would need to do is go into a drawing only showing the existing beams (which makes it easier for the next step), then select all the existing beams, then edit the properties and add a comment, like "existing".  You can then filter by comment: "existing".

If I change structural framing in the visability graphics, than all of the structural framing, both existing and new, will display as such. I want existing members to display differently than new members, but also differently than existing walls. It seems I can only change all structural members to be the same or everything existing to be the same, but not existing members only.

I suppose your other idea might work. But mainly, what i want, is to set up our template file so all of our projects automatically display all existing framing a certain way without having to manually do it each time. Otherwise it kind of negates the point of using phases at all.

Isn't it possible to create an extra phase? One phase for existing beams and one for existing walls.

Well I got it to work. What I did was change the linetype to hidden in the existing phase filter, and then created a seperate regular filter for all walls to display as solid lines. Apparently adding another filter overrides the phase filter graphics, so my existing framing is now hidden lines and my existing walls are solid and I still retain the functionality of using phases.
