.max or a 3DS file? the only files that can be brought into revit are CAD,IFC, SKP, DNG and SAT. If its a #DS file you will need to save it as a 3-D CAD file to import it.

What kind of "3D MODEL" are you trying to import???? cars, plant, the whole building, what??? what i can advide is, and i just did several posts about this issue, if you are import (for example) a CAR or a PLANT so create a new family in the right category (CAR=Entourage Family, PLANT= Planting Family......), then import the "3d Model" into the family, after this you have two choises, ONE-go to VG and you have there "Imported Objects" there you change the material, color. OR the SECOND- in Settings>materials you gonna see several "Render ###,###,###" this is the colors you have in CAD, so what I do is change those "Render ###..." (one by one) by the respective material i want and I change the name so in this way (change name) i know when i load that family tho the project what material i want to change (if i need) for example: "Car_Doors", "Car_Glass".....

Ensure the different materials have their own layers in max. - import dwg file
- go to settings-->object styles-->Imported tab
- you'll see you layers here.
- in the materials column apply, create or edit the material you wish to apply to each layer...
This is my preferred way of applying materials to cad imports as you don't have to keep the materials with ambiguous names...
