so i have this wall mounted light that works great, with the exception that it mounts to 3 in from the wall's centerline and not to the face of the wall. i have removed just about every constraint and lock that there is in the light's family, but i think the problem is because of these reference planes that will not delete. also, when i move these certain reference planes, many of the lights elements move with it. . . any suggestions???

Sorry but it looks like you will have to re-build this family correctly. Because Revit creates associations between elements, I like to build wall faced elements off a work plane that is named and located more than 12" off the face of the wall. Then I will add a dimension from the face of wall to this reference plane ... set it to 0 and lock it which then moves everything to the face of wall.
