I didn't realize this before, but there is quite a lot you can do with a family.....especially if you start from scratch!

You can program your object to take simple user input data and transform and re-configure itself according to the excel-like programming environment!  Here's a simple example: my air plenums adjust in size according to the largest air opening dimensions.  This is because I have defined, for example, the plenum length to be the largest air opening width + 4".

If anyone is interested in learning how to work with families check out this link (it's got video tutorials):

http://designreform.net/2009/01/08/revit-family-basics/

At the moment, I am working on customizing a linear bar grille diffuser.  My goal is to make it stretchable (by numerical input data), and make it add new air openings on the underside as the diffuser gets longer and longer.  For example, the default diffuser is 4ft long with one air opening.  If I go into element properties and make it 8 ft long, I want it to automatically add another air opening (complete with parametric associations), but NOT if I make it 6 ft long.

Hope someone can comment and/or give some hints!

Thanks in advance

Joe
