hey all,

I'm new to revit having been on archicad for some years previously, I'm having trouble understanding the families and how they work, I gather that they are the same as a library part? the parts I am making will be mainly kitchen and laundry applainces for upload, they will also have to be converted so as to be opened in archicad and microstation. what is the best way to do this after making the object? do you have to make different project files for every part?

sorry I realise these are probably dumb questions from the newbie

any help would be much appreciated

thanks

welcome aboard....and I hope I can help have experience in both....short and sweet

Revit families, unlike Archicad parts are not loaded every time you open a file....they (families) reside in the file....if you change them and reload...you will get the "do you want to change properties" dialog ...typically you say yes and everything is changed....the nice thing about this...you can have families dedicated to a particular job...even though it "originated" from the same family.....

Microstation to Revit to Archicad and the beat goes on....going back and forth for all three and others....I highly recommend using IFC conversions....this works great for us....in my company there are 30 some odd packages and thank god I can IFC all them....you will find IFC in your export functions.....depending on which version of Mu your using....you might have to go Bentley's website to get the mdl and support files....

hope this helps .... I will try to stay posted after work hours to see if you need help...presently little swamped at work...talk to you soon
