Images cannot be imported to pat files to create hatches...
I thought you wanted the images for rendering?
Anyways the best way to create hatch patterns is using a program called Hatch Kit (not free). Otherwise you'll either have to find the appropriate hatch pattern somewhere or from someone, or learn how to write pat files using online tutorials (I gave up and just bought the program is not very expensive and very handy to have).
Cheers.

Thank you for the link to steelselect.com. It's great. If I want to create a custom colored metal siding based on the .bmp on this site, how do I go about it? Here's how I've been doing it but I just get a flat color when I render. The swatch I made show some subtle pattern, though. Render Appearance Based on: I picked Generic Scene: I tried both Default and Flat, but did not make a difference Generic Material Properties: I picked a color I liked - Single Color. Bump Pattern: I picked image file, one of the grey corrugated .bmp pattern that I downloaded from steelselecct Amount: I picked single value, and played with the sliding scale. 1 seems to work best on the swatch. I haven't touched anything else on the rendering setting. I'm probably doing something really obviously stupid here... please help. Thanks in advance!!
