This is a general question that I am open to all and any kind of feedback on.

What do you feel is necessary to be modeled in a recessed lighting fixture component? The entire fixture as it is made from the manufacturer?  Or just as it would be seen realistically sticking out of a ceiling, with only the mass that resembles how much room is required for clearances (for collision detection) behind the host ceiling?

That is an intriguing question.  What might be nice is to have a scalable detail level: as in a corse level, a medium and or a fine detail level.

Depending on how, where and why one is cutting sections or even 3D views; different levels of complexity are usually helpful.

I am personally a fan of detail.  I say if you're going to draw a building, you should draw a building!  I'd like to see walls with embedded studs and Top Plates with Lap Splicing and set lengths; Foundations with the Rebar; Roof and Floor Diaphragms broken into 4x8 sections.  The more information that can be put into the Building Model and tested, the fewer the number of Field Changes during Construction.  That is afterall, the idea that lead us to Revit, right?

That is a great point! I am a fan of detail as well.  One thing that I do integrate into my models is detail level.  Course level just showing a symbolic representation of the component the way we use to draft it in AutoCAD/hand drafting, Medium being a simplified model with less detail and Fine showing the entire model the way it was modeled.  At the same time we must think about how much information we are putting into these components and if it will bog down the project file with unneeded information.  For instances, how much graphic information should we really show for a recessed downlight? Enough information for drafting, rendering, and collision detection? Or all of the above right down to the screws and welds that hold it together (enough info for the manufacturer to use for his drawings)?  Although I do not think the answer is that much detail, I do think we the users need to define this.  It would be nice if Autodesk  would provide better content and tutorials on how to create content that preforms optimally for all disciplines.  I know manufacturers are jumping on board with Revit now, it would be great if we the users could help direct the creation of this content into some sort of standard.  Does anyone know if this is already happening?
