how do i use the sweep and revolve massing tools... I'm not sure what the paths actually control?  I am trying to create a round somewhat curvy object to represent a tree trunk and I'm having some issues getting the shape I want.  Is there a way to make a sweep blend go vertical, if so that would resolve my problem.

if you draw the path in a elevation/section view, it will be vertical sweep blend...

You should also use the revit help, to learn about work planes...

I have tried that and it does not let me draw my path in either view... only allows me to draw my path on a floor plan or ceiling plan

Look, create a "Ref Plane" in your plan view, then go to the "Work plane" and select "Pick a Plane" pick in that Ref Plane, now you can choose the view you want to draw, select elevation or Section view...
