I have a new computer with 3 GB of RAM but Revit seems to be only using 1 GB (when performing a RAM intensive task like exporting to PDF with shadows, the task will take 20 minutes but when looking at the task manager cpu usage it always hovers at around 1 GIG or 50% usage). Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is Revit programmed to only use maximum 1 GB RAM or do I have a hardware problem?
(My computer specs are:
Dell Precision PWS370
Pentium 4
3.4 GHz
3 GB RAM)
Thanks in advance for your help!

This is not a revit problem.
This is a physical limitation of Windows. Windows will not allow a single process to use more than 50% of CPU resources. As for the RAM our computers typically have 2 gig of RAM and i find revit will use 1.5 Gig no problems before it starts using page files.
So i'm not sure as to why your computer would be only allowing revit use of 1G. Maybe something best discussed with a Windows expert.
So in summary, not a revit problem, windows problem...

Thank you, Mr. Spot, for your consistently helpful insight. I was afraid it might be a PC or Windows limitation, and, judging from your feedback, I suppose it is....I'm trying now expanding my paging file size to see if that might help speed things up.

After further research, it seems that Windows has a process/memory limitation of 1GB. Meaning that Windows processes can only use 1GB of addressable memory. Does that mean that all machines should only have 1GB of RAM. Absolutely not. Having more RAM gives your machine the ability to multitask better. However at this current state, Microsoft's XP operating system only allows a single process to occupy only 1GB of addressable memory. This may change in future releases of the OS.
