Hi All- I'm a grad student in Architecture who is new to Revit. I'm using Revit Architecture 2009 Student version. I really want to create this quarter's project in Revit, but I'm struggling with learning the program. The project is multi-family housing, 6 stories tall with ground floor retail.  I have completed the 'getting started' excercise. I tried checking out some free tutorials too.

I successfully imported GIS topography information and created toposurface and different elevation levels. I started placing walls on my lower level but I skipped foundation - is that okay? or do I always need to start from foundation?

I also want to insert two elevators into the building that I started creating, but I have no clue how to do that. I downloaded RFA file from the RevitCity web site and Autodesk web site, but I'm not sure how to place them. I tried going to Modeling>Components>Load... to load the new RFA files, but wasn't successful. I proably am doing something fundamentally wrong, but am not sure how to approach it. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you in advance for your help!

"I started placing walls on my lower level but I skipped foundation - is that okay? or do I always need to start from foundation?" - You can start the project by the roof if you want, about the elevator, after you load into the project go to your "project browser" to the Families and check where is the family you just load, then Drag-and-drop into a wall....

Thank you for your reply, Typhoon.

However, I wasn't able to just drag and drop... maybe it's because of the family that I downloaded? If you don't mind, could you point to a working elevator file that I can download?

or maybe it's the wall problem??

Thank you for your help.

you should be able to find elevators at the Autodesk Distrubtion Download Center

Thank you Coreed.

I tried to 'seek' elevators on the website that you listed and I downloaded what looked like a most generic elevator, Traction Elevator Cab by Reed Construction Data.

http://seek.autodesk.com/?prodid=revitlib:platform:2009:en#query=search^detail^H4sIAAAAAAAAAEtMT7cqSk1NsbKwNLcAAMqM4ccNAAAA

However, I'm still not quite sure how to insert it.  Dragging it and dropping it doesn't work. It does not show up in the plan view. When I choose 3D view, it shows up, but I cannot insert the elevator in the shaft that I created. It does not want to stay inside the shaft. I cannot move it inside either. It always sticks out of the shaft opening or go somewhere completely outside of the shaft. Can you or someone post a step by step instructions on how to insert an elevator?

I found a step by step instruction on how to insert elevators on the following pdf in case someone else is having a same problem. www.sdcpublications.com/pdfsample/1-58503-292-1-3.pdfI guess my fundamentall mistake was that I should have navigated to a correct elevator file. (Somehow, when I did search under keyword 'elevator', generic elevator under 'conveying systems' didn't show up.)

Hi, for the next time you can also try Elevatorarchitect, an elevator plug-in for Revit. It helps you by choosing the right elevator solution for your building and also inserts the elevator into your Revit project. So no struggling with families anymore. The plug-in is available as free download at http://www.digipara.de/ElevatorArchitect.aspx.
